Balinfern is a 13 hectare (32 acre) rural property at Rosebank in the subtropical hills behind Byron Bay, the most easterly point in Australia. The region, is often called the ‘rainbow’ country, or the Northern Rivers District in far northeast New South Wales, Australia. The region is the home of many so-called 'alternative' lifestylers, but by any description the small communities in the region are abounding in fun-loving and friendly people who have a very special connection with their environment and try to preserve it as best as they are able.
Wildlife abound at Balinfern - birds of many native varieties, a number of koala colonies, possums of many species, platypus, freshwater crayfish, snakes both venomous and non-venomous, lizards, and a reestablishing colony of wallabies to name a few.
Plantation Cabinet Timber
Balinfern is at the centre of what was once the largest subtropical rainforest region in Australia. Due to early farming and logging practices, many square kilometres of this beautiful region were denuded of rainforest. There are luckily large sections still safe from human intervention included in nearby national parks, and a number of smaller areas,(including some on Balinfern), in private holdings. We feel privileged to have in our hands the future of some small remnant rainforest patches on our property. Balinfern is also proud to have about 5 acres of rainforest cabinet timber plantings under cultivation. These government registered, and therefore eventually harvestable plantations, will provide for future generations cabinet timbers of unique beauty without the need to further endanger old growth rainforests remaining in this region. These plantings provide not only a very commercially valuable economic resource for the plantation's owners and their descendants, but an undoubtedly valuable resource in aiding in the management of the fragile ecosystem in this region and its associated flora and fauna.
Cattle Grazing
At Balinfern we also run a few head of cattle in the lush green paddocks that are watered by the permanent creeks that run through the property.
